The game came to life in the closing minutes of the first half. Shevchenko
combined with Contra down the right and the Romanian picked out Jose Mari
at the far post with a perfect cross but he headed wide. Gresko held off
Rui Costa as he bore down on goal and Toldo palmed away a great effort
from Kaladze. Jose Mari wasted another great opportunity, this time from
a corner.

Vieri wasted a great chance from Seedorf's cross. Shevchenko dragged a shot
wide of the post. Di Biagio chipped a ball into the box, it bounced off
Laursen and fell to Ventola, Abbiati only succeeded in helping Ventola's
cross onto Vieri and he kneed the ball over the line. Chamot deflected
Christian Zanetti's shot against a post.

The first goal arrived just shy of the hour mark after both teams had spurned
enough chances to win three matches. Caracciolo flicked the ball past Guardalben
after ? helped on a corner. Piacenza hit back with two quick goals, Poggi putting
in first Sommese then Hubner with short passes. Caracciolo equalised from
Giunti's free kick.

Fresi, who will join Juve next season, sent a 50yd free kick into the box.
Ferrara missed the ball and Zauli chipped over Buffon. Juve were level
less than a minute later. The usually reliable Bologna defence went to
sleep from a throw in, Nedved lobbed the ball up to the back post where
an unmarked Trezeguet headed into an empty net. Bologna looked to be
holding on for a point until Tarantino headed Pessotto's cross into his own net.

Crespo and Pancaro headed Lazio into a two goal lead before Crespo added a
third just before half time from the penalty spot. Bettarini curled in a free kick
and Venezia were awarded an indirect free kick inside the box, presumably
because Peruzzi handled a back pass. Di Napoli's shot bounced up off the wall
and Maniero headed past Peruzzi then did his usual celebration - ran off sombre
faced. He needs a local aesthetic for a smile. A hospital pass gave Crespo his
hat-trick.

A terrible mistake from the usually reliable Chimenti gifted Roma their usual set
piece goal. He flapped horribly when Candela whipped a free kick into the box.
A superb shot by Delvecchio should have given Roma what would have been an
unassailable two goal lead. The ball rebounded off the post, off the underside of
the crossbar and into Chimenti's grateful hands. Another goalkeeping error gave
Lecce a share of the points. Vugrinec headed into an empty net after Antonioli
came out for a corner and missed the ball.

fantastic free kick. Toro's offside trap gave Perugia the cushion of a second goal.

Adriano forced Zanchi into loosing possession and the ball broke for Morfeo.
The Verona defence backed off and Morfeo bent he ball inside the post. Di Livio
delivered a superb cross though he slipped as he kicked the ball which explains
why the cross was accurate for a change - Adriano headed into the net. Mutu
pulled a goal back from a corner but doomed Fiorentina held on.
