SERIE A ROUND 5

INTER CLEAR TOP AS JUVE AND MILAN LOSE

30 SEPTEMBER 2001

LAZIO 0-0 PARMA

Zac went back to his old Udinese tactics by playing with a big man in attack
(Kovacevic). He managed one header on target which was predictably,
spectacularly saved by Frey and sent two headers wide. Mendieta finally
did something of note in a Lazio shirt but Frey was equal to his 20yd drive.
Parma only managed one worthwhile effort, a first time strike by 21 year old
Marchionni which was brilliantly saved by Marchegiani.

There's an old saying "this team couldn't buy a goal" which seems appropriate
at this moment given between them these two teams have spent over £100
million on transfers this season. Frey is by far the best buy either of these two
teams have made over the summer. He's back to being the best goalkeeper in
Serie A.

Attendance : 30,000

BRESCIA 3-3 ATALANTA
Baggio 25, 75 Sala 27
Rinaldi 92 Doni 30
							Comandini 45

Baggio opened the scoring with a marvellous volley. Doni flicked on Paganin's
free kick for Sala to equalise. Doni's superb 25yd strike gave Atalanta the
lead. Comandini, another former Milan player, seemed to have sealed victory
at the end of the first half. Tare headed on Antonio Filippini's long ball
and despite being man-handled by Rinaldi, Baggio turned and shot past Taibi.
Deep into injury time Rinaldi headed Baggio's free kick past his own 'keeper.

Assists : Antonio Filippini, Doni, Paganin (x2), Tare

FIORENTINA 3-1 VENEZIA
Chiesa 6 Maniero 84
Nuno Gomes 67, 87

The most spectacular goalscorer in Serie A added another wonder strike to his
collection, a right foot volley in off the post. Nuno Gomes tapped in a
rebound. Maniero out-did Chiesa with an even more spectacular volley but Nuno
Gomes put paid to any hopes of a comeback with a late goal.

Attendance : 14,000
Assists : Morfeo (x2), Donnet

INTER 1-0 BOLOGNA
Georgatos 24

Georgatos scored from a twice taken free kick. Toldo pulled off a miracle
save right at the death to deny Bologna what probably would have been a
deserved draw. Inter are top for the first time in an eternity.

Attendance : 70,000
Red Card : Pecchia 83 (Bologna)

PERUGIA 3-1 MILAN
Bazzani 57 Kaladze 68
Tedesco 75
Vryzas 79

Bazzani headed in Ze Maria's cross. Kaladze levelled from Serginho's corner.
A terrible mistake by Abbiati handed the lead back to Perugia. He came for
Ze Maria's cross and punched it in the air allowing Tedesco to head into an
empty net. Cordova split Milan's offside trap and Vryzas steered the ball
past Abbiati to seal a marvellous victory.

Attendance : 12,000
Assists : Ze Maria, Serginho, Cordova

PIACENZA 2-1 TORINO
Hubner 9, 87 (Pen) Lucarelli 58
Gautieri 20

A simple opener for Piacenza thanks to pathetic defending by Fattori. Gautier
vaulted over Delli Carri and ran down the right flank before sending the ball
into the box, Fattori should have cleared but missed completely and
Springsteen tapped in. Gautieri headed in Volpi's free kick. Lucarelli scored
with a deflected free kick. Fattori was sent off for chopping down
Springsteen. Springsteen converted a penalty to go top of the Serie A
goalscoring charts.

Attendance : 8,000
Assists : Gautieri (x2), Volpi
Red Card : Fattori 85 (Torino)

UDINESE 1-2 CHIEVO
Caballero 38 Perrotta 20
							Eriberto 23

Perrotta slid in to meet Manfredini's cross and Eriberto headed Chievo into a
two goal lead from Corini's corner. Caballero headed in Pizarro's free kick.
The ref then lost the plot sending off four players for what seemed like
arguing.

Attendance : 15,000
Assists : Manfredini, Corini, Pizzaro
Red Cards : Pizarro 85 (Udinese), Muzzi 95 (Udinese), Moro 95 (Chievo),
D'Angelo 95 (Chievo)

VERONA 2-1 LECCE
Gilardino 12 Vugrinec 42
Gonnella 46

Oddo whipped a cross into the box, Chimenti and Juarez both went up for the
ball, Chimenti missed and Juarez headed straight to Gilardino, 1-0. A comedy
of errors allowed Vugrinec to tap into an empty net. Gonnella headed in
Mutu's free kick.

Attendance : 14,300
Assists : Cirillo, Mutu

29 SEPTEMBER 2001

JUVENTUS 0-2 ROMA
							Batistuta 36
							Assuncao 93

Buffon was called into action twice when the right side of Juve's defence
disappeared. Batistuta gave Roma the lead with a stunning 35yd free kick but
continued to struggle in the box, missing an open goal after Buffon had
parried Tommasi's drive.

Roma coped comfortably with Juve's un-imaginative pumping crosses into the
box tactic. Del Piero missed a 100% chance to draw Juve level in injury time.
Salas sent a low cross into the box, Trezeguet dummied the ball taking two
defenders with him and from 10yds out Del Piero shot over the bar. Cafu beat
Paramatti to Assuncao's cross, squared for Montella, his shot was blocked by
Iuliano but Assuncao smacked in the rebound.

Juve blew it and blew it big time. This was a golden opportunity to get a 8
point lead over the reigning champions. The result puts Roma back in the
title picture.

Attendance : 49,454 for £200,000
