SERIE A ROUND 6

FIRST DEFEATS

Inter and Roma crash to their first defeats of the season. Milan struggle at
home to Cagliari. Fiorentina suffer another home defeat to improving Parma,
Lazio thrash Udinese to go clear at the top of the table.

16 OCTOBER 1999

UDINESE 0-3 LAZIO
							Veron 30
							Boksic 42
							Mihajlovic 84

A cakewalk for Lazio who blew apart Udinese with three fantastic strikes.
Veron, IMO the best player in Europe at this moment in time, blasted Lazio
into the lead with a ferocious right foot volley from Conceicao's cross.
Boksic then scored his first league goal for close to 18 months with another
powerful close range strike following good work by Almeyda. Mihajlovic set
a record when he blasted in a free kick, I believe he's scored more goals
from free kicks than any player in Serie A history.

FIORENTINA 0-2 PARMA
							Di Vaio 82
							Boghossian 90

Fiorentina had the better of this match with Batistuta wasting the type of
chances he used to put away with ease, he could have had a hat-trick.
Amoroso came off injured and his replacement, Di Vaio, turned the game in
Parma's favour though Trapattoni's inexplicable decision to take off Batistuta
and Chiesa for old men Balbo and Mijatovic may have had something to do
with it. Di Vaio ran onto a great through pass from Lassissi, bounced off
Toldo and poked the ball under Repka into an empty net. He also had a hand
in Parma's second, in a great display of sportsmanship he stayed on his feet
in the box despite contact from Toldo, passed to Fuser who in turn set up
Breda and his horribly miscued shot was volleyed past Toldo by Boghossian.

17 OCTOBER 1999

LECCE 2-1 REGGINA
Sesa 48 (Pen) Baronio 41 (Pen)
Bonomi 77

Lucarelli had a goal disallowed for offside. Possanzini won a penalty, Baronio
converted. Lecce won a dodgy penalty of their own, Sesa converted. Bonomi
won the match with a great free kick. The ref then ruined the game with two
red cards. Chimenti was sent off for throwing the ball at Cirillo's head and
Bonomi was sent off for a love tap on Pirlo.

Red Card(s) : Chimenti 87 (Lecce), Bonomi 94 (Lecce)
Attendance : 14,060

MILAN 2-2 CAGLIARI
Shevchenko 10 (Pen) Morfeo 7
Bierhoff 78 Berretta 38

Morfeo injured himself as he gave Cagliari the shock lead from a corner when
pouncing on a pathetic clearance by Helveg. Shevchenko equalised from the
spot after Bierhoff went down from a Zebina love tap. Abbiati denied Mboma
with a great tackle as the Cameroon powerhouse left Ayala in his wake. More
inept defending led to Cagliari's second, Ayala, Ambrosini, Serginho and Ayala
again failed to stop Oliveira, Ambrosini fouled him, no penalty, Diliso
picked up the loose, passed to Oliveira and he brushed off Ayala and centered
for Berretta who tapped into an empty net. Berretta was booked for throwing
himself over Abbiati, never a penalty but Milan were very fortunate to get
away with it. Guly and Giunti came on for Helveg and Albertini and turned
the game in Milan's favour but not before Mboma struck the post with a
fantastic hooked volley. Shevchenko blazed over when put though by Giunti.
Scarpi saved brilliantly to deny Weah. Zebina pulled down Bierhoff but this
time no penalty. Maldini had a headed goal disallowed. Giunti struck the
post. Bierhoff equalised with a great first time shot following good work by
Ambrosini and Leonardo. Scarpi saved brilliantly from Giunti's deflected
shot.

Berlusconi and Galliani were in the stands. I will be amazed if something
isn't done to address the defensive problems. Ayala makes Costacurta look
like Thuram.

Attendance : 45,000

PIACENZA 0-0 BOLOGNA

Gautieri got himself sent off for persistent arguing when disputing a claim
for a penalty. Fontolan was bleeding like a stuck pig. Not sure how it
happened. Piacenza had the better of the play.

Red Card(s) : Gautieri 40 (Piacenza)
Attendance : 10,000

TORINO 3-1 BARI
Silenzi 42 Innocenti 46
Ferrante 83 (Pen)
Scarchilli 92

Silenzi, remember him? gave Torino the lead with a fantastic diving header
from Tricarico's cross. Perrotta sent a shot throw a crowded penalty area
from a corner, Masinga inadvertently back heeled the shot across goal and
Innocenti scored from close range. Sommese won a penalty, Ferrante converted
and then teed up Scarchilli for Torino's third.

Attendance : 20,000

VENEZIA 1-0 INTER
Maniero 46

Zamorano chipped a shot against the crossbar when put through by Di Biagio.
Zamorano wasted another chance when volleying wide from a great Sousa pass
and Ronaldo, in his only moment of magic, ghosted past the Venezia defence,
combined brilliantly with Zamorano, rounded the 'keeper but Luppi cleared
off the line. Maniero cushioned a great cross from Dal Canto into
Petkovic's path, Peruzzi brilliantly saved but Maniero slammed in the rebound.
Moriero shot inches wide when put through by Ronaldo. Peruzzi then denied
Petkovic with a miraculous double save and came to Inter's rescue again with
another great stop from Valtolina. Collina turned away a penalty appeal after
Zamorano appeared to be clipped by Konsel.

Valtolina and Petkovic were sensational. Iachini had a colossal gave in
defensive midfield. Peruzzi sparred Inter a heavy defeat with a string of
awesome saves. Ronaldo looked a shadow of his former self and clearly
lacks confidence. Lippi threw on Vieri, Baggio and Jugovic to no avail
as Venezia deservedly came away with 3 points.

Attendance : 12,312

VERONA 2-0 PERUGIA
Cammarata 25
Calori 59 (own goal)

Brocchi chipped the ball into the box Cammarata killed it superbly with his
left foot and blasted a half volley past Mazzantini. Tedesco headed against
the crossbar. Calori turned a corner past his own 'keeper and Mazzantini
was sent off for a love tap on Marasco.

Red Card(s) : Mazzantini 84 (Perugia)
Attendance : 12,000

ROMA 0-1 JUVENTUS
							Zidane 50

Alenichev had a goal dissalowed for offside. Iuliano blasted a volley against
the crossbar. Antonioli pulled off a great save from a Del Piero free kick.
Van der Sar saved brilliantly to deny Candela and Montella. Zidane won the
match with a great free kick and was later sent off for diving.

Red Card(s) : Zidane 92 (Juventus)
Attendance : 75,000
