FENERBAHCE 3-0 MAN UNITED

Tuncay gave the Turks the lead with an outstanding goal early in the second half. He met Ozat's cross with a scissor kick ON THE TURN, the ball crashed in off the underside of the crossbar. He headed in a second from a free kick and completed a fine hat-trick on the break.

Attendance : 35,000
Assists : Ozat, Alex (fk), Serhat

LYON 5-0 SPARTA PRAGUE

Essien began the rout with a brilliant flick header from Bergougnoux corner. Blazek then made a blunder that would even embarrass Arsenal's Lemon. He leapt up to catch the ball from a header, pulled it into his body as he landed then he began to stand but dropped the ball leaving Nilmar with quite possibly the easiest goal of all time. Incredibly he made the same mistake early in the second half with the same result i.e. goal for Nilmar. Idangar scored the pick of the goals, he ran straight at the Sparta defence, played a one-two with Frau then lobbed the ball into the bottom corner. Lyon's fifth wasn't bad either. Reveillere hit a superb long ball up to Bergougnoux, I can imagine the job the English commentator will do on his name, he bounced it off his knee before smashing into the corner.

Attendance : 38,571
Assists : Bergougnoux (ck), n/a, n/a, Frau, Reveillere

MAN UNITED 2-1 LYON

Reveillere made a hash of a clearing Smith's cross and Gary Neville thumped Man United into the lead against the run of play. Diarra's speculative long range shot slipped through Carroll's fingers. Fittingly Van Nistelrooy headed in the winner in Taggart's 1000 match in charge and condemned Lyon to their first defeat of the season.

Attendance : 66,398
Assists : n/a, Juninho, Rio Ferdinand

3 November 2004

MAN UNITED 4-1 SPARTA PRAGUE

Van Nistelrooy began the rout when he latched onto a hospital pass and jumped over a wild lunge by the 'keeper before tapping into an empty net. Scholes made up for missing a sitter by diving to win a penalty. Zelenka scored a fantastic goal for the visitors, he dummied Poborsky's pass letting it run onto Jun, Jun played it into his path and he lobbed first time over Carroll. Under pressure from Van Nistelrooy Kovac failed to clear a long ball and the striker completed his hat-trick with a close range lob. He was standing miles offside when he scored his fourth.

Van Nistelrooy is rapidly closing in on Raul as the competition's top scorer (41 in 45 vs 47 in 92) and given his vastly superior strike rate it would be fitting if he topped the charts ahead of that fraud.

Attendance : 66,706
Assists : n/a, Scholes (won pen), Jun, n/a, Miller

LYON 4-2 FENERBAHCE

The French champions fell behind to an own goal. Lucien slipped when trying to clear Malouda's cross gifting Essien the equaliser. Another mistake by the Fenerbahce defence gave Lyon the lead. Luciano leapt above the Lyon defence to head Alex's corner kick goalwards and Tuncay poked the ball over the line. The referee was Italian (and possibly a friend of Taggart) so managed to find six minutes of injury time. Nilmar got the faintest of touches to a Juninho free kick and two minutes later scored with a near post header on the break.

FENERBAHCE 1-3 LYON

Juninho blasted Lyon into the lead with a fantastic shot from the edge of the box. Cris headed in a second after Marco Aurelio flicked on Juninho's corner. Nobrash pulled a goal back immediately after the Lyon defence switched off but the Turks made the same mistake at the other and Wiltord beat their offside trap and laid a goal on a plate for Frau to seal a second away victory for the impressive French champions.

Wiltord has made four and scored one in the Champions League this season. Not bad for a reject.

No sex, no drugs, no rock 'n' roll and no points for Daum.

Attendance : 40,000
Assists : Wiltord, n/a, Tuncay, Wiltord

28 September 2004

MAN UNITED 6-2 FENERBAHCE

Kleberson made the first goal with a strong down the left, his cross superbly met by Giggs. Rooney marked his Man United debut with a hat-trick and if you thought the hype over Rooney after Euro 2004 was unjustified you would be very, very wrong. The assist came from the most unlikely of sources, Van Nistelrooy with a perfectly weighted pass which Rooney hammered high into the net as Rustu came to clear. Rooney's second goal epitomised his talent, a drop of the shoulder took him away from a defender and he took one touch to control Giggs pass before rifling a low shot into the bottom corner. In between two goals gift wrapped by the Man United defence Rooney completed his hat-trick with a free kick, apparently he do those as well. The ball may have taken a deflection off a Fenerbahce player. Van Nistelrooy blasted in a fifth and the very, very rubbish Bellion completed the rout.

Assists : Kleberson, Van Nistelrooy, Giggs, Van Nistelrooy (won fk)?, Fletcher, Rooney

SPARTA PRAGUE 1-2 LYON

Lyon's highly rated 20 year old Ghanaian midfielder cancelled out Jun's header with a superb half volley. Despite the efforts of Sparta goalkeeper Blazek and a defender Wiltord just about kept his balance to net the winner.

Assists : Pergl, Wiltord

15 September 2004

FENERBAHCE 1-0 SPARTA PRAGUE

Assist : Alex (ck)
Red Card : Servet 73 (Fenerbahce)

LYON 2-2 MAN UNITED

The Mancs took their league form straight into Europe with disastrous results. The normally dependable Howard spilled Juninho's free kick and Cris tapped in. Right on the stroke of half Lyon caught Man United on the break. Wiltord, released on a free by Arsenal, ran deep from his own half down the heart of the Man United defence, taking three players with him before laying the ball off to Frau who finished emphatically. Van Nistelrooy rescued a point with a 5 minute brace. He rose above Cris to head in Ronaldo's cross and notched his 28th European Cup goal for Man United when he pounced to turn in Ronaldo's deflected shot.
