BAYERN MUNICH 3 (Ribery 35, Tymoschuk 37, Ribery 50)

Kroos played an extravagant return pass to Contento as the duo combined down the left, Cabral glanced at Contento before deciding to let the ball run out of play, Contento barged him off the ball and centred for Ribery to score his first Champions League goal of the season. Tymoschuk stabbed Gomez's goalbound header over the line to steal the second from his team-mate. Ribery made it 3-0 on the break from Muller's cut-back, his gentle first time shot nestled into the bottom left corner.

Attendance : 66,000
Assists : Contento, Gomez, Muller

CLUJ 1 (Traore 88)
ROMA 1 (Borriello 21)

Borriello, left in acres of space by the Cluj defence, ran onto Simplicio's through pass and tapped past Stancioiu before Rada could close him down. Traore headed in a cross from Roma's tormenter in chief Culio but Roma held on to get the pointed they needed to join Bayern in the last 16. Basel get the UEFA Cup place.

Attendance : 20,000
Assists : Simplicio, Culio

23 November 2010

ROMA 3 (Borriello 49, De Rossi 81, Totti 84 Pen)
BAYERN MUNICH 2 (Gomez 33, Gomez 39)

Ribery turned on a Kroos pass and who else but Super Mario Gomez pounced to score his fifth Champions League goal. Muller closed down De Rossi as he attempted a high risk pass out of defence, the ball broke to Gomez and he poked it wide of Julio Cesar. Neat finish but Mario Gomez, WTF?!?!?

Menez blew past Tymoschuk then nutmegged Demichelis before played a centre to Borriello who, under pressure from Lahm, fell but still managed to scramble the ball over Kraft. Kraft, Bayern's 22 year old reserve 'keeper, made a sensational double save from De Rossi then Brighi on the follow-up. De Rossi tapped in Riise's centre after the Bayern defence failed to track his run and Totti completed an unlikely comeback from the penalty spot after Kraft tripped Borriello.

Attendance : 42,789
Assists : n/a, n/a, Menez, Riise, Borriello (won pen)

BASEL 1 (Almerares 15)

Clunge coach Sorin Cartu took out his frustrations by putting a boot through the plexi-glass in the coaches dugout.

Attendance : 34,239
Red Card : Piccolo 88 (Cluj)
Assist : Inkoom

3 November 2010

BAYERN MUNICH 4 (Gomez 12, Gomez 24, Gomez 71, Muller 90)

Stancioiu made a brilliant save from Ottl following some great interplay around the Cluj penalty area and Gomez rifled in the rebound. He scored his second with a tap-in at the far post. Gomez completed his first European hat-trick from Schweinsteiger's reverse pass and Muller scrambled in the fourth as Altintop's lob was about to be cleared off the line.

Attendance : 9,000
Assists : n/a, Schweinsteiger, Schweinsteiger, Altintop

BASEL 2 (Frei 69, Shaqiri 83)
ROMA 3 (Menez 16, Totti 25 Pen, Greco 76)

As the Swiss defenders appeared to wait for the ref to blow for a foul on Vucinic on the edge of their penalty area Menez tapped the ball past an unsuspecting Costanzo. Stocker hauled down Riise by his shorts to concede the penalty. Burdisso flicked on an un-defendable cross and Frei headed in at the back post. Borriello tried to beat two players in the box in slow motion and as he went down looking for a penalty Greco (who?) smashed the ball into the bottom right corner. Stocker stamped on Burdisso's ankle with his right foot and brought down his left on his chest. Should be a ten game ban. Shaqiri tapped in a loose ball. Stocker was shown a second yellow for fouling Totti.

Two crap teams = five goals. Whoever draws the runners-up of this group in the last 16 has hit the jackpot.

Attendance : 37,500
Red Card : Stocker 90 (Basel)
Assists : Vucinic, Riise (won pen), n/a, Borriello, n/a

19 October 2010

ROMA 1 (Borriello 21)
BASEL 3 (Frei 12, Inkoom 44, Cabral 93)

Mexes didn't even bother challenging Streller, who towers above him, for a cross and Frei slammed his knockdown into the net. Totti sent Borriello, Roma's player of the season, clear of Basel's awful offside trap to equalise. Perrotta, a poor man's Camoranesi (and Camoranesi is very poor), failed to track Ghanaian full back Inkoom and he beat Lobont with a well struck half volley. Totti gave further confirmation that he's a hindrance to this team when he carelessly lost possession deep in his own half, Chipperfield passed to Cabral and he dribbled through four Roma players before shooting wide of Lobont. Brilliant goal.

Attendance : 22,365
Assists : Streller, Totti, Shaqiri, Chipperfield

BAYERN 3 (Cadu 32 og, Panin 37 og, Gomez 77)
CLUJ 2 (Cadu 28, Culio 86)

Cluj briefly stunned last year's runners-up. Taking advantage of typically poor Bayern marking. The Romanian's defending was even worse. Cadu deflecting in a Kroos centre and Panin got the last touch on a Bayern corner. Stancioiu parried from Kroos, Cadu, who had a dreadful game, should have cleared but kicked fresh air and the ball went in off the hopeless Mario Gomez, who was running in the follow-up. Lahm's poorly judged tackle allowed De Zerbi to make a second.

The return leg should be equally entertaining. Three of Bayern's big hitters watched from the bench - Van Bommel, Ribery and Robben.

Attendance : 62,000
Assists : De Zerbi (fk), n/a, n/a, n/a, De Zerbi

28 September 2010

BASEL 1 (Frei 18)
BAYERN MUNICH 2 (Schweinsteiger 56 Pen, Schweinsteiger 89)

Streller ran at the Bayern defence, taking his marker wide, back healed into the space, Frei stepped past Van Buyten and whipped a first time shot into the top right corner. Brilliant goal. Huggel tripped Muller to concede a stupid penalty and Schweinsteiger completed the comeback when he broke from Basel's sorry excuse of a wall to touch in Badstuber's free kick.

Attendance : 37,500
Assists : Streller, Muller (won pen), Badstuber (fk)

ROMA 2 (Mexes 69, Borriello 71)
CLUJ 1 (Rada 78)

Roma rode their luck, Traore almost destroyed the frame of the goal on two occasions with fantastically violent shots. Pizzaro played a corner short to Mexes who fired through a ruck of bodies. Borriello came off the bench to score Roma's second with a trademark volley. Rada headed in Culio's corner. A reversal of Cluj's famous win at the Olimpico two years ago.

Attendance : 30,252
Assists : Pizarro (ck), De Rossi, Culio (ck)

15 September 2010

BAYERN MUNICH 2 (Muller 79, Klose 83)

Van Buyten headed down a Burdisso clearance and Muller, the best young player in the World, struck a volley with the outside of his left foot into the bottom left corner. Great goal. Klose pounced on a terrible mistake by Roma goalkeeper Julio Sergio to head in what was only his 11th Champions League goal.

Attendance : 69,000
Assists : Van Buyten, Badstuber (fk)

CFR CLUJ 2 (Rada 9, Traore 12)
BASEL 1 (Stocker 47)

Cluj hit Basel with two early headed goals. Rada from a corner and the other from one of those random Traore's, Juan Culio (remember him?) with both crosses. Stocker headed in a Frei corner deep into first half injury time.

Attendance : 15,000
Assists : Juan Culio (ck), Juan Culio, Frei (ck)
