22 JUNE 2002 SPAIN 0-0 SOUTH KOREA Nothing happened in the first half. Baraja had a goal disallowed for no reason whatsoever. Joaquin laid a goal on a plate for Morientes but he managed to shoot wide from two yards. Casillas made a phenomenal save from Park's spectacular volley. Joaquin should have scored after an excellent reverse pass from Valeron left him with the goal at his mercy. In first half extra time Spain had another goal disallowed when a linesman raised his flag as Joaquin sent a cross to the back post and Morientes headed into the net. Terrible decision, the ball wasn't even close to being out of play, the reason the linesman flagged. Morientes volleyed against the post from a quickly taken throw in and Mendieta blew the rebound. Korea win 5-3 on penalties. Hwang, Hierro, Park, Baraja, Seol, Xavi and Ahn successfully converted from the spot. Joaquin's penalty was saved and Hong sent Korea into the semi-finals. Spain have every right to feel more aggrieved than Italy. Italy only had themselves to blame for not putting away their chances but Spain did put away their chances. There is something very suspicious about the pro Korean officiating. As the old saying goes fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. "It was a difficult game. Too bad that we lost. We have worked hard and fought our best but the other team had more luck. Congratulations to the Korean team for their victory." - Jose Antonio Camacho "I cannot describe how I'm feeling. I'm so happy for the boys who fought until the end. I think more dreams have come true now." - Guus Hiddink SENEGAL 0-1 TURKEY 94 Ilhan Sukur missed chance after chance in the first half. He ran onto a long ball and dithered allowing Malik Diop to get back and tackle, Hasan Sas won the ball and centred but Sukur hit fresh air with the goal gaping. He missed another open goal when Ergun rolled a perfect pass to the back post. Daf made a fantastic goal-line clearance from Basturk's header. Ilhan came on in place of the dire Sukur in a second half devoid of chances but got on the end of a great move started by Rustu in extra time. Rustu threw the ball out to Arif and he charged past Daf, Daf eventually caught up and brought him down but the ref played the advantage, Umit ran onto the ball and whipped a low cross into the box and Ilhan volleyed into the net. Fantastic goal. Poor match. Turkey should have been out of sight after 30 minutes. Senegal were too hurried in attack. "The match went into extra time, to a golden goal. It went one way, then the other. We came up against a very good Turkish team. Luck and maybe talent made its choice tonight but I would like to congratulate my team for all their efforts." - Bruno Metsu "I have been pleased with our collective spirit and our sense of togetherness. I am also very, very proud that such a small country can come to the World Cup and really rock the boat among the hierarchy of world football." Bruno Metsu "Everybody in Turkish football has put in such a great effort. Right now we're living one of the most important days and I congratulate my players." Senol Gunes "First of all, Hakan Sukur is one of the best players in Turkey. He has contributed extremely in the past and we know he was a little bit unlucky today. The one who replaced him (Ilhan) has been in recent years in good form. He scored the golden goal. Everyone played their part." - Senol Gunes Assist : Umit 21 JUNE 2002 ENGLAND 1-2 BRAZIL Owen 23 Rivaldo 43 Ronaldinho 50 Owen pounced on a terrible mistake by Lucio to give England the lead. Seaman injured himself when coming out for a cross but continued after receiving treatment. Ronaldinho ran through a feeble tackle by Scholes, Cole with a double step over and rolled the ball wide to Rivaldo and he slotted into the corner. Scholes gave away a free kick wide on the left with a stupid foul. Ronaldinho took it, his cross sailed over Seaman and dropped into the net. Mills got Ronaldinho sent off by over-reacting to a kick on his right foot. Beckham went looking for penalties. Mills deflected shot was about as close as England came to equalising. Seaman left the pitch in tears and apologised for his mistake. He clearly wasn't 100% after landing heavily in the first half yet selfishly played on. A poor match between two teams afraid of making the mistake that would decided the match. England made two, Brazil made one. Scolari fielded Klebersen and Gilberto Silva to strengthen the midfield. Brazil were much improved in defence. England were desperately disappointing in attack. "I feel it has been a job well done. Being where we are is a feeling of personal satisfaction. To be alive and not to die, that was the only thought we had. That was the only thing I had in my mind and this was the subject of the talk we had before the match amongst the players." Luiz Felipe Scolari "We had a very good opportunity to reach the semi-finals. We did well in the first half until overtime. We played good football, defended and attacked the ball. They scored in the last minute of the first half and scored again at the start of the second. We should have done better with 11 men against 10, of course. We didn't use that advantage very much. I have to congratulate Brazil, they have a very good football team. I hope they can reach the final and maybe win it." - Sven Goran Eriksson Assists : Ronaldinho, Ronaldinho (won free kick) Red card : Ronaldinho 57 (Brazil) GERMANY 1-0 USA Ballack 39 Donavan had a great chance on the break. He nutmegged Metzelder, cut inside Linke and hit a shot towards the corner but Kahn made a marvellous save. Donovan ran into a ton of space after a superb ball over the top broke the German's high offside trap but Kahn was quick to close him down. Lewis shot straight at Kahn from another counter attack. Germany scored with their first genuine chance - Ballack heading in Ziege's free kick. Neuville got a second chance on a corner and picked out Klose with a perfect cross but he headed against the post. Kahn made a fantastic reaction save from Berhalter on a corner, tipped the ball onto Frings hand and caught it, Berhalter should have been booked for going in hard on the follow-up. Sanneh made a fantastic tackle in the box to deny Klose. Berhalter was booked for a shocking foul on Klose. Sanneh, who had a great match, met McBride's cross at the neat post but headed wide. Bode and Bierhoff wasted chances on the counter as the US pressed forward looking for an equaliser. "I'm absolutely happy to reach the semi-finals. Although I'm not quite happy about the manner in which we made it. From the beginning, we didn't play as I wanted us to play. We withdrew far too much into our own half. The United put a lot of pressure on us and we just didn't get the combination play going as I would have liked to." - Rudi Voeller "I was proud of our team. I thought we played well for 90 minutes. We came out and got after the German team, which was our game plan. We were pretty confident that we could pressure them, and create some chances, and I think we did that. The difference in the game besides the goal by Ballack was Kahn. He came up with some great saves and kept them in the match in the early and he came up with some saves in the second half that kept us off the board. was probably the difference in the match." - Bruce Arena Assist : Ziege (free kick) |
