26 JUNE 2002 BRAZIL 1-0 TURKEY Ronaldo 49 The first two chances in a match played at breakneck speed fell to defenders. Marcos made a Hollywood save from Alpay and at the other end Brazil almost recreated the legendary goal scored by Carlos Alberto, this time it was Ronaldo with a rolled pass out wide to the right back, Cafu, but Rustu got a touch. Rustu made a phenomenal reaction save from Ronaldo after he spilled Rivaldo's shot straight to the striker's feet. Rivaldo missed a great chance following a good run by Edilson. A tremendous piece of skill by Gilberto got him past Alpay on the right wing, he flicked the ball around the defender and passed to Ronaldo who was 30yds from goal. He dribbled past Bulent and as he ran into the box hit an early shot which caught Rustu off guard and the ball rolled into the net. Excellent finish. Edilson and Kleberson missed chances created by Ronaldo to kill off the match. Sas sent a free kick to the back post, Sukur waited for the ball to drop over his shoulder then turned and volleyed at goal but Marcos saved. Substitute Ilhan was way off target with two chances. Fantastic match. Brazil's defending was much improved over recent outings. Turkey have one of the best midfields in the World but lack genuine quality in attack. Assist : Gilberto Silva 25 JUNE 2002 GERMANY 1-0 SOUTH KOREA Ballack 75 C S Lee carried the ball from the half way line and sprayed the ball wide to Cha who ran in on the blindside of Metzelder, Cha rolled the ball back across the face of goal, C S Lee shot first time and Kahn made a Hollywood save. Neuville volleyed straight at Lee after Klose helped on Kahn's goal kick. Klose should have been booked for diving in the box. Klose was substituted for Bierhoff after wasting a header. Ballack was booked for bringing down Cha. The second yellow he has picked up in the knockout stages which means he will miss the final. Minutes later Ballack hit the winner. Schneider released Neuville down the right flank and sent the ball across goal, Ballack's first time shot was saved by Lee but he tapped in the rebound. Bode went close with a free kick. Neuville was booked for diving. Awful match. Korea coped better than expected with Germany's air game but rarely threatened at the other end. |
| Third Place Play-Off 29 JUNE 2002 SOUTH KOREA 2-3 TURKEY Lee 9 Sukur 10 seconds Song 93 Ilhan 13, 32 Korea kicked off and passed the ball back to their defenders. Ilhan stripped the ball off Hyong Ming Bo who was taking an eternity to turn and passed to Sukur who tapped his pass into the net. E Y Lee equalised less than 10 minutes later with a fantastic free kick which curled around the wall and went in off the post. Basturk ran onto a loose ball in his own half while the were waiting for the ref to blow for a foul. He passed to Ilhan who played in Sukur with a great reverse pass, Sukur drew out the 'keeper and Hong then rolled the ball back to Ilhan and he chipped into an empty net. Rustu launched a goal kick downfield, Sukur headed the ball back to Ilhan, he attempted to play a one-two but the ball deflected off M S Lee and Ilhan calmly lobbed over 'keeper. Korea had a goal disallowed for offside, shame. Turkey sat back in a second half notable for some truly horrible finishing by the Korean's. Song grabbed a late consolation goal when his speculative shot deflected in off Cha. In a classy moment both teams joined hands and walked over to applaud their fans. "I would have liked to get third place desperately. We made some big mistakes in defence in the first half. That's the emotion of loss in the little Final but in general, when I see and hear the public reacting to the team, and what they did in the second half when they were two goals down, it was a tough job.
