1 Milan were demoted from 2nd to 3rd after being stripped of 30 points for their role
in the Calciopoli scandal.

Dida gained a reputation as a penalty specialist after winning shoot-outs in the Copa
Libertadores with Cruzeiro. Milan saw him as the ideal replacement for the ageing
Rossi but a blunder in a European Cup match against Chelsea appeared to bring an
early end to his Milan career and he was promptly sent back to Brazil.

Dida put his Chelsea nightmare behind him as Corinthians beat Vasco da Gama
on penalties to win the 2000 World Club Championship and win a recall to Milan.
He quickly displaced Abbiati as first choice 'keeper and was outstanding as the club
rebounded from several barren years to win the 2003 European Cup against
Juventus on, what else, a penalty shoot out.

For once his penalty saving heroics deserted him as Milan crumbled to defeat in
the Intercontinental Cup final against a mediocre Boca Juniors side but a string of outstanding saves against Juventus and Ajax had established him as the best
goalkeeper in the World. Dida ended the season with his first domestic league championship after a decade long career.

Milan were on course for a league and cup double the following year. In a
Champions League quarter-final second leg clash against Inter, the giant
goalkeeper was outstanding. After Inter, already trailing 3-0 on aggregate,
had penalty appeals turned down their supporters hurled objects onto the pitch,
one of which, a flare, struck Dida on the shoulder. He was substituted and
although made a quicker than expected return to first team action he quite
clearly wasn't the same and made a series of mistakes none more costly than
against Liverpool in the European Cup final - he was largely responsible for two
of their three goals.

While the physical scars from the flare have healed, the physiological scars
remain and following more indifferent form for Milan the giant goalkeeper's
career in Italy looks to be coming to an end.
