Foolishly released from Atletico
Madrid's youth team Raul was snapped up by their arch rivals and given his debut by Jorge Valdano at the expense of crowd favourite Emilo Butragueno. Aged 17 he quickly established himself in the first team and helped Real end Barca's four year reign as Spanish champions. Raul became the symbol of Real Madrid as they dominated domestic and European football. His importance to the club is open to debate but certainly his influence has been marginalised in recent years following the arrivals of more 'galacticocs' i.e. Figo, Zidane, Ronaldo, Beckham and Owen. Raul is the all time Champions League top scorer by default, having played more games in the competition than most other players. Three European Cup winners medals and four Spanish Championships before his 26th birthday is an impressive list of achievements but as his failure to land the Ballon D'or and World Player of the year awards shows, despite the unerring bias of the Spanish press and his team-mates, the rest of Europe isn't convinced.
