Schmeichel's performances in Denmark's unlikely European Championship success in
1992 made him a household name. He saved a penalty from Marco Van Basten in
the semi-finals and pulled off a string of outstanding saves in the final. He went on
to become one of key players in Man United's all conquering team and left the club
after winning the European Cup in 1999.

Commanding in the air, an excellent shot stopper and outstanding in one on one
confrontations, Schmeichel was, along with Gianluca Pagliuca, the best goalkeeper
of the 1990s.

Schmeichel has scored 9 league goals, 6 for Hvidovre in 1985, 2 for Hvidovre in 1987
and 1 for Aston Villa in the 2001-2002 season. In an international friendly against
Belgium on 3 June 2000, Schmeichel scored a penalty. The match finished 2-2.
