1 Milan were demoted from 2nd to 3rd after being stripped of 30 points for their role
in the Calciopoli scandal.

The player spotted by Harry Redknapp as a teenager announced himself on the
European stage with a hat-trick against Barcelona in the Nou Camp. The striker's
formidable partnership with Sergei Rebrov took Dynamo Kyiv to the brink of a
European Cup final. After ending the reign of European champions Real Madrid,
Dynamo were eliminated by Bayern Munich at the semi final stages, a trademark
blunder by the teams weak link goalkeeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy costing them a
crucial late goal.

Milan won the race to sign Shevchenko for £18 million. He took Serie A by storm,
scoring 48 goals in his first two seasons. Milan had at last found a replacement
for the legendary Marco Van Basten but would not challenge for silverware until
Ancelotti's tactical revolution in 2002.

An injured Shevchenko watched from the stands as his team-mates rolled off a
series of impressive victories in Europe. He put disappointing league form behind
him to net the winner in a hard fought victory over reigning Champions Real Madrid,
was man of the match in an epic 3-2 victory over Ajax, scored the crucial away goal
against Inter in the semi-finals and hit the winning penalty in a shoot-out victory
over Juventus to clinch Milan's sixth European Cup. The Italian Cup followed weeks
later and the next season Shevchenko, brilliantly supported by youngester Kaka'
and Tomasson, fired Milan to a record breaking scudetto in which the team took
22 out of a possible 24 points against the top four clubs i.e. Juventus, Inter, Roma
and Lazio.

After two years of unprecedented success Shevchenko and Milan's season fell apart
in spectacular fashion in 2005. Having clawed back an 8 point deficit against
Juventus, Milan lost a head to head battle against their bitter rivals in a controversial
clash at the San Siro. Worse was to follow in the European Cup final. Having
destroyed Liverpool with a scintillating display of attacking football, Milan had
a 3-0, half-time lead whittled away early in the second half. The match was headed
for penalties when Shevchenko was guilty of a miss from point blank range then
in the shoot out, 2 years after converting the penalty which won Milan their
sixth European Cup, his weak spot kick was saved, handing the cup to Liverpool.
