An assist is the final pass or cross that results in a goal being
scored. If a shot takes a deflection off a team-mate an assist is awarded to the player who had the initial shot and a goal is awarded to the player who last touched the ball. Any shot that takes a deflection off an opposition player and results in a goal being scored is classified as an own goal UNLESS the deflection occurs either inches from or on the goal-line. In this case as the ball was likely to cross the goal-line the goal is awarded to the player who struck the initial shot and an assist is awarded if a player made a pass to the goalscorer. |
