The defender with a goalscoring record the envy of most forwards, Koeman was
curiously sold to arch rivals PSV by Ajax where he enjoyed phenomenal success
culminating in winning the 1998 European Cup. He also starred in Holland's
1988 European Championship winning side.

After three successive championships at PSV Johan Cruijff took Koeman to Barcelona
where he won four successive championship and scored the winning goal in the clubs
only European Cup triumph, a trademark free kick deep into extra time in the 1992
final against Sampdoria thus becoming the first player to win European Cups with
two different clubs.

He ended his playing career at Feyenoord and after an excellent debut season as
coach with Vitesse Arnhem, lead Ajax to a league and cup double in his first
season and another league championship in 2004 but resigned following a
UEFA Cup defeat. He is now coach of Benfica.

Koeman's right foot was a weapon of mass destruction, long before David Beckham
and Sinisa Mihajlovic gained a reputation as free kick specialists, defenders would
tremble at the prospect of facing this stockily built defenders violent free kicks, once
measured at over 70mph and this was before the introduction of modern, lighter
footballs.

Koeman played as sweeper, not because of defensive qualities, he was a competent
defender at best, but his laser precision passing was instrumental to Barcelona, less
so for Holland. 'The fourth Dutchmen' in reference to his more illustrious team-mates
i.e.- Gullit, Van Basten and Rijkaard, Koeman probably doesn't get the respect he
deserves at least outside of Spain and the Netherlands.
