Milan countered from a Lazio throw-in, Bonera released El Shaarawy with a longball and a superb cross found Honda in space on the right and he shot through Berisha's legs. Just as rare as a Honda goal for Milan was an Abate cross that didn't hit the first man. Honda was again involved (and would have had this impact last season but for the dire Kaka' taking his spot) and Muntari got between four defenders to volley in Milan's second. Menez dived for the penalty. Alex turned Candreva's centre into his net. Abate tripped Candreva to concede a 94th minutes penalty but Lopez was more than equal to Candreva's awful spot kick.

European failures Napoli scored on a counter attack. Higuain seemed to overcook his cross but Callejon arrived at the back post to slam a volley into the net. Genoa missed half a dozen good chances, which is no exaggeration, before Pinilla equalised. Substitute De Guzman scored an ill deserved winner when the Genoa defence failed to deal with a longball into the box.

Empoli surprisingly had the better of the first half. Di Natale played a one-two with Muriel, the Colombian with an outstanding angled pass, before side footing wide of Sepe.
