LIVERPOOL 3-1 OLYMPIAKOS

Olympiakos took the lead against the run of play from Rivaldo's free kick. He shot, the wall parted, Kirkland didn't move, 0-1. At this point Liverpool need three goals to go through and given their response to going behind that didn't seem likely.

Pongolle came on at the start of the second half for Traore and had an immediate impact, scoring a tap-in following an all too rare piece of dribbling wizardry from Kewell. Benitez's second substitute, Mellor (for Baros) also scored within two minutes, slamming in a rebound after Olympiakos failed to clear a free kick. Fittingly it was Gerrard who sent Liverpool through to the last sixteen with an outstanding strike. Carragher beat a defender before crossing into the box, Mellor headed the ball towards his captain and he struck first time from 20 yards, sending the ball flying past Nikopolidis.

DEPORTIVO 0-5 MONACO

For the second consecutive season Monaco gutted Depor like fish. Chevanton beat Munua with a blistering shot at his near post after the Depor defence screwed up offside. Givet made it 0-2 with a beautifully struck volley from the edge of the box. Having conceded twice Depor persisted with their high offside trap and were deservedly punished when Saviola pushed Chevanton's pass ahead of Pablo Amo before racing away and slotting into the corner. Maicon volleyed in a fourth from a corner. Chevanton brushed aside a feeble challenge from Andrade before drawing out Munua and completing a hat-trick of assists with a pass to Adebayor.

Depor become the first side in the history of the competition (in this format) to have not scored a single goal.

Depor are out, everyone else is in the running for a place in the knockout stages. Olympiakos only need a point. Liverpool need to win by more than a goal. A win guarantees Monaco a place. Figure the rest out yourself.

19 October 2004

MONACO 2-1 OLYMPIAKOS

Monaco raced into a two goal lead inside ten minutes. Saviola, this years loan signing from La Liga, rode a tackle then dribbled past three players before toe poking into the roof of the net. Chevanton's goal wasn't bad either, he turned a defender on the edge of the box before curling inside the post. Monaco screwed up playing offside and Okkas feigned to shoot before blasting into the bottom corner.

MONACO 2-0 DEPORTIVO

After scoring two goals inside ten minutes everyone would have been forgiven for expecting another 11 goal thriller. I would have settled for half but with so many goals in other matches why grumble? Both goals were identical, long balls over the top, chased down by Adebayor and centred for Kallon and Saviola. As George Bush once said "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice don't fool me again." (who was he addressing, the voters?). Don't answer, it's a joke.

Assists : Adebayor (x2)

15 September 2004

LIVERPOOL 2-0 MONACO

Cisse put his disappointing league form behind him to send Liverpool on their way to an easy victory over last season's beaten finalists. Gerrard played a one-two with Garcia before threading a ball to the Frenchman who blasted first time past Roma. Baros, on for Cisse, controlled Josemi's long ball on his chest before dancing around the Monaco defence and shooting into the net.
