5 December 2006

OLYMPIAKOS 1 (Castillo 54)
SHAKHTAR 1 (Matuzalem 27)

Matuzalem was the unlikely scorer from a corner kick, taking advantage of Nikopolidis terrible positioning to head Jadson's cross into an empty net. Castillo equalised from close range after Rivaldo touched back Maric's cross.

Attendance : 27,500
Red Card : Rat 90 (Shakhtar)
Assists : Jadson (ck), Rivaldo

ROMA 1 (Panucci 13)
VALENCIA 0

As expected Flores fielded a much weakened Valencia side with Italian flop Tavano given a rare chance to impress ahead of the transfer window. Panucci scored the only goal, heading in from a yard out after Mexes helped on Taddei's free kick. Valencia lost another player to what looked to be a knee injury when 17 year old striker Aaron's legs buckled after he crossed.

Attendance : 45,000
Assist : Mexes

22 November 2006

VALENCIA 2 (Stoltidis 45 og, Morientes 46)
OLYMPIAKOS 0

Angulo scored via a big deflection off Stoltidis. In the first minute of the second half Morientes met Silva's outstanding cross with a firm header which Nikopolidis should have saved. The unlucky Joaquin had an outrageous lob cleared off the line and struck a post with a free kick from a ridiculous angle.

Attendance : 38,000
Assists : n/a, Silva

SHAKHTAR 1 (Marica 61)
ROMA 0

This shouldn't have come as a surprise, Roma are hopeless in this competition. They only need a point at home to Valencia due to a superior head to head against Shakhtar and you'd figure Valencia would field a weakened sided especially in mind of their injury crisis. On the other hand Shakhtar need to beat Olympiakos in Greece which won't be easy.

Attendance : 18,673
Assist : Jadson

31 October 2006

SHAKHTAR 2 (Jadson 2 fk, Fernandinho 28)
VALENCIA 2 (Morientes 18, Ayala 68)

Jadson gave Shakhtar the lead with a FANTASTIC free kick. Shakhtar were tearing Valencia apart with blistering attacks but conceded an equaliser against the run of play when Morientes showed unreal reactions to flick Villa's free kick past Shust. Matuzalem sprayed a pass out wide to Fernandinho, he took two steps forward before unleashing a stunning drive from 35 yards which flew inside the right post. Brilliant goal. Moretti flicked on a Villa corner and Ayala threw himself at the ball to score with a low, low low diving header.

Attendance : 21,000
Assists : Fernandinho (won fk), Villa fk, Matuzalem, Moretti

ROMA 1 (Totti 66)
OLYMPIAKOS 1 (Julio Cesar 19)

Julio Cesar gave Olympiakos a shock lead from a corner. Zewlakow punched away a shot in full view of the Portuguese referee in the box, no penalty. A scandalous decision as was his failure to send off Julio Cesar for bringing down Taddei but at least on this occasion he pointed to the spot. For the second time this month Totti failed to convert but much of the credit must go to Nikopolidis for making an incredible save. Totti finally broke the Olympiakos resistance with a superb strike. Taddei chipped a ball into the box and the Roma captain, being closely marked by Anatolakis (who had came on as a sub a minute earlier), killed the ball before smashing a half volley between Anatolakis's legs and into the left corner of the net.

Attendance : 20,000
Assists : Rivaldo (ck), Taddei

18 October 2006

VALENCIA 2 (Villa 30, 45)
SHAKHTAR 0

Villa hit a pass to Regueiro but he was dispossessed by Leanardo however instead of hoofing the ball clear the defender tried to pass it wide and Villa intercepted, rounded the 'keeper, just managing to stay on his feet after he was fouled, and tapped into an empty net. Villa headed in his second right on half time after Joaquin teased Tymoschuk before floating a cross to the back post.

I'm not sure about the defence but going forward this Valencia side are a real threat.

Attendance : 45,000
Red Card : Sviderskiy 76 (Shakhtar)
Assists : n/a, Joaquin

OLYMPIAKOS 0
ROMA 1 (Perrotta 76)

Attendance : 30,000
Assist : Rosi

27 September 2006

SHAKHTAR 2 (Matuzalem 34 fk, Marica 70)
OLYMPIAKOS 2 (Konstantinou 24, Castillo 68)

Castillo managed to skip over a ludicrous two footed challenge from Tymoschuk, turned on the breaks then hit a low centre into the box and Konstantinou go in front of his marker to put the visitors ahead. According to UEFA Matuzalem scored Shakhtar's equaliser direct from a free kick, Hubschman celebrated as if he got the last touch. Who knows? The erratic Nikopolidis made two World Class saves before his team regained their lead in controversial circumstances when Castillo appeared to use his hand to score after Maric drew a save from Shust. Marica equalised after the Greeks made a mess of defending a free kick.

Attendance : 20,000
Assists : Castillo, Srna (won fk), n/a, n/a

VALENCIA 2 (Angulo 13, Villa 29)
ROMA 1 (Totti 18 pen)

Vicente hit a deep cross towards the back post. Morientes attempted a volley but completely miss-hit the ball, it bounced right, Angulo leapt in the air and struck a volley which flew in off Doni's right hand post, marvellous goal, similar to the one McManaman scored in the 2000 European Cup final ironically against Valencia. Totti despatched a penalty awarded for Moretti's rugby tackle on audio Cassetti. Moretti made up for his earlier mistake by laying on the winning goal for Villa.

Both Mancini and Taddei are out injured but playing Perrotta behind Totti was a ridiculous decision. The giant child Okaka would have been more effective.

Attendance : 48,000
Assists : Morientes, Cassetti (won pen), Moretti

12 September 2006

OLYMPIAKOS 2 (Konstantinou 28, Castillo 66)
VALENCIA 4 (Morientes 34, Morientes 39, Albiol 85, Morientes 90)

Konstantinou got between two defenders to chest down Stoltidis excellent pass and poked the ball past Canizares. Villa burst down the left and fired a shot across goal which Morientes stabbed in from close range. Morientes put Valencia in front with another tap-in after Angulo forced Nikopolidis into a save on a lightning counter attack. Castillo darted between two defenders to control Djordjevic's ranking pass on his chest before firing into the corner to equalise. Olympiakos looked good for a point until awful defending from a corner was ruthlessly punished by Albiol and Morientes completed his hat-trick with a header from another corner.

Attendance : 48,000
Assists : Stoltidis, Villa, n/a, Djordjevic, n/a, Silva (ck)

ROMA 4 (Taddei 67, Totti 76, De Rossi 79, Pizarro 89)
SHAKHTAR 0

Taddei smashed the ball in at the back post after Totti miss-hit a cross. His touch was more assured less then 10 minutes later when he thumped a first touch shot into the top left corner. A short corner routine brought Roma their third, De Rossi meeting Pizarro's cross with a bullet header and Pizarro blasted in a fourth from the edge of the box.

Attendance : 30,000
Assists : n/a, Taddei, Pizarro, n/a
