BASLE 3-3 LIVERPOOL

A rapid passing move tore the fabled Liverpool defence wide open inside the first two minutes. Atouba knocked the ball into Giminez who in turn laid it off for Esposito, Esposito hit a first time pass into Yakin and Rossi arrived at the back post to tap-in his centre. Basle went route one for their second goal. Zuberbuhler launched a goal kick into Liverpool's half, Gimenez headed the ball onto Rossi, Rossi laid it off to Yakin who hit a beautiful chipped pass straight over Gimenez and he beat a hesitant Dudek to the ball, 2-0. Dudek then parried Yakin's venomous free kick straight to Atouba, empty net, 3-0.

Murphy began the fight back, hitting the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the box following good work by Diao and Smicer. Smicer then combined with fellow Czech international Baros, the young striker flicked Diao's knockdown over the Basle defence and Smicer volleyed into the corner. Liverpool were awarded a penalty for handball. Zuberbuhler saved Owen's penalty and almost saved his follow-up on the rebound. Too little, too late.

Assists : H Yakin (x2), Smicer, Baros

LIVERPOOL 1-1 BASEL

An excellent counter attack gave Liverpool the lead. Heskey ran onto a hospital pass, charged past a midfielder, Baros took the ball, swapped passes with Heskey and hit a magnificent right foot volley past Zuberbuhler. Rossi capitalised on a mistake by Carragher to equalise.

Liverpool hit the woodwork three times in this match. This shouldn't have even been close. Fielding Owen in attack is a complete waste of time.
