12 NOVEMBER 2002
GENK 1-1 REAL MADRID
Sonck 76 Tote 12
Moons flapped at corner, Pavon sent the ball back across goal and
Tote poked into an empty net. Morientes should have been sent off for
a shocking two footed lunge on Skonko. Incredibly Skonko wasn't injured
and his corner was headed in by Sonck to give the Belgians their sixth
straight draw in the competition.
Assists : Pavon, Skonko (ck)
ROMA 1-1 AEK
Delvecchio 40 Centeno 90
A shocking header by ex Inter player Georgatos gifted Roma a well
deserved opening goal. His sliced clearance was headed on by Panucci
and Delvecchio headed over Chiotis. Chiotis should have been sent off
for handling a Montella shot when outside his box. Cassano kicked fresh
air on a rebound after Chiotis had again denied Montella. Tsartas swung
a free kick into the box and Centeno poked past Antonioli to earn a
scarcely deserved point.
Assists : Panucci, Tsartas (fk)
30 OCTOBER 2002
REAL MADRID 0-1 ROMA
Totti 28
Raul and Montella missed early chances. Raul had a goal disallowed for
offside when he tapped in a rebound after Antonioli spilled a Zidane shot.
Montella's shot deflected off Hierro and fell kindly to Totti who blasted a
first time strike past Casillas.
AEK could go through with a win away to Roma but Roma are improving fast
after a terrible start. Genk can still claim a UEFA Cup place if they beat a lazy
Real Madrid side. Real are through due to their superior goal difference from
all matches.
AEK 1-1 GENK
Sonck 22 Lakis 30
Sonck made amends for a terrible miss when he tapped Suzuki's centre past
Moons. Chiotis came out of his box to clear as Lakis chased down a long
ball, Lakis flicked the ball over him before tapping into am empty net.
Assists : Suzuki, Wright
22 OCTOBER 2002
REAL MADRID 2-2 AEK
McManaman 24, 43 Katsouranis 74
Centeno 85
Bench warmer McManaman hit two first half goals seemingly sending the reigning
champions on their way to another victory over jobber opposition. He tapped in
a Cambiasso centre and ran onto a pass from Private Gomer Pyle (Ronaldo)
before slotting into the corner. Katsouranis pulled a goal back from a corner
and Centeno slammed in an unlikely equaliser as Madrid's defence again
cracked under pressure.
Assists : Cambiasso, Ronaldo, Centeno (corner), Ivic
ROMA 0-0 GENK
It's fair to say that both teams created and wasted numerous chances. It's
also fair to say Roma are shite and should be ashamed of failing to win
against this type of opposition.
2 OCTOBER 2002
AEK 3-3 REAL MADRID
Tsartas 6 Zidane 15, 39
Maladenis 25 Guti 60
Nikoladis 28
AEK won an early free kick. Tsartas crashed the ball against the post, the ref
booked him for time wasting then made him take the free kick again! This time
he scored with a phenomenal shot. A fabulous first touch from Zidane took
him from a defender and he cracked a left foot shot inside the post. Absolutely
brilliant goal. Maladenis restored AEK's lead when Casillas went walkabout on
a corner. The Real defence ball watched as Tsartas floated a free kick into the
box and Nikoladis headed AEK further in front. Raul flicked on a Figo corner
and Zidane volleyed in unmarked at the far post. Guti earned the champions
a share of the points with a superb volley.
Assists : Raul, Tsartas (ck), Tsartas (fk), Raul, Roberto Carlos
GENK 0-1 ROMA
Cassano 82
Goalkeeper Moons was sent off for handling outside his box. Genk's reserve
'keeper Schollen made some excellent saves but when he came out for a cross
defender Zokora hacked the ball clear, it fell straight to Cassano and he
headed into an empty net.
Red Card : Moons 9 (Genk)
25 SEPTEMBER 2002
AEK 0-0 ROMA
A fair result on the balance of play given both teams were shite.
REAL MADRID 6-0 GENK
Zokora 45 (og)
Salgado 46
Figo 55 Pen
Guti 64
Celades 74
Raul 76
Genk managed to survive for 45 minutes then Real cut loose. They went in front
via a deflected effort by Guti. Figo and Raul swapped passes in the box but
before Figo could shoot Salgado drilled the ball past Moons. Heleguera dived
to win a penalty, as if Real needed any help. Figo converted. Guti dispossed
a Genk defender on the edge of his own box to score an easy fourth. Major
league bench warmer Celadres got in on the act before Raul finished things
off with a splendid left foot half volley.
If you're going to get beat might as well get beat in style.
Assists : Raul (x2), Morientes
16 SEPTEMBER 2002
GENK 0-0 AEK
ROMA 0-3 REAL MADRID
Guti 42, 75
Raul 56
Roma had two chances within seconds of each other. A mistake by Hierro
let in Montella but he managed to recover at the expense of a corner. From
the resulting corner Panucci headed against the post. That was 5 minutes
into the match and about as good as it got for Roma. Real took the lead
late in the first half. Raul sprayed a ball wide to Guti, he cut inside Panucci,
or to be more precise Panucci cowardly turned his back to play, before
curling the ball past a helpless and exposed Antonioli. Raul lashed home
a clearance from Dellas to make it 0-2. A sudden turn of pace took Guti
away from Tommasi, he skipped past a poor challenge by Dellas and
despite a lunge by super defender Walter Samuel, grabbed his second
of the night.
I wonder who Capello and Sensi will blame for this one?
Assists : Raul, Salgado
