Schweinsteiger played a great ball through Inler's legs and Gomez turned his marker inside out before scoring. He jumped to volley home a Kroos cross and completed his hat-trick with a Johnny on the Spot style tap-in after De Sanctis saved from Kroos. Fernandez twice headed in set pieces. Zuniga was sent off for clipping Ribery and Badstuber for a trip on Cavani. Fernandez' second was from the resulting free kick. In a crazy finish Fernandez blocked from Lahm then got to his feet to deny Alaba. Seconds later with everyone encamped in the Bayern half including De Sanctis, Gomez got hold of a loose ball and shot from the edge of the box towards an empty net only to be denied by De Sanctis who ran all the way back before making a great sliding clearance a yard from the goal-line!

Balotelli was clipped by Musacchio after he nutmegged the defender and got up to despatch the penalty. Toure took advantage of the huge gaps in Villarreal's defence to score a third on the break.
